Ignition specialist NGK is recommending workshops get ready for winter by stocking up with glow plugs to service their customers’ diesel-powered vehicles.

In November, the company is giving members of its BoxClever independent garage loyalty scheme a special incentive to fit its glow plugs by awarding them fifty prize points for each purchase instead of the normal twenty points.

Motorists can be sure they are getting the correct-fit glow plug to meet the vehicle manufacturers’ performance criteria for their particular model when they choose NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd products.

Diesel has undergone a huge amount of change in recent years, but although technology has moved on, the glow plug is essentially doing the same job that it always has done in raising the temperature inside the combustion chamber so that stable combustion is achieved.

Unfortunately, replacement data is unavailable as glow plugs are not a service replacement item in an engine and no mileages or time recommendations for change are made by the vehicle manufacturers.

However, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd advises the replacement of sets of glow plugs this winter and works closely with its distributors to make sure they always have the right plugs in stock to cope with increased demand.

Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “The cold winter months are on the way so now is the time to take action to get ready for increased demand for glow plugs.

“Reliability is key to NGK‘s success. Vehicle owners can be confident that their engines are fitted with glow plugs which meet or exceed vehicle manufacturers’ specifications. This ensures improved drivability during engine warm up and the ever-important reduction of emissions – thanks to outstanding extended post-glow capability.”

The company believes it is important for distributors to educate garages on the importance of maximising glow plug sales by advising that instead of changing one faulty glow plug, they should ‘upsell’ by replacing all of them.

If one plug has failed, it is extremely likely that the remaining plugs will shortly suffer a similar fate. By replacing the vehicle set, not only will the tight emissions legislation be complied with, but as the glow plug is now an integral part of the engine management system, the starting and cold drive quality will be kept at its maximum.

NGK glow plugs:

  • Start diesel engines quickly and smoothly
  • Offer an excellent post-glow function
  • Have a long service life
  • Offer the latest in high technology for today and tomorrow

As an OEM supplier to many vehicle manufacturers, NGK products have a strong reputation with the OE fitment benefitting end-users.

NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd recommends the fitment of glow plugs manufactured to OE specification and says ‘budget’ alternatives should be avoided.

With NGK glow plugs, engines run quietly and smoothly. They are kinder on the environment too, thanks to the promotion of clean combustion and lower toxic emissions.
