Tom Oliphant’s 2017 late season run of success has continued unabated as Tom headed out to Bahrain for the Porsche Carrera GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East.
At the final round of the Carrera Cup UK, at Brands Hatch (pictured), Tom took the Philips Racing Vision Porsche to a hard fought podium finish, coming from the third row of the grid to move past eventual 2017 Cup Champion, Charlie Eastwood, with a few laps to run.
With the UK season having finished, a late decision was made to enter Tom in Porsche’s Middle East Carrera GT3 series, which runs over the winter months. The first round, in Bahrain, supported the final race in the 2017 World Endurance Championship and it proved to be an excellent weekend for Tom.
In an exciting first race of the weekend, Tom avoided being too heavily caught up in an early race skirmish to emerge in second place. He chased down the leading car and closed in, but didn’t have enough laps to make a concerted challenge. Nonetheless he was extremely pleased with a strong second place in the opening round.
Even better was to come in race two as the Philips-branded driver came home, after a race-long battle for the podium places, to take his maiden Porsche Cup win (pictured). “I’m absolutely over the moon to win here in Bahrain,” commented a delighted Tom after the race. “It was an incredible battle between the top three – one of the most fun races I’ve had.”
“We’re absolutely thrilled to see Tom take this breakthrough win,” enthused Richard Armstrong, who is responsible for Philips Automotive products in the UK.”He is an excellent driver and a great ambassador for our products. We look forward, hopefully, to celebrating further successes with him, in the future.”
Tom now heads the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East as it moves to its next round in Dubai.
