Gloucester-based Forge Motorsport has announced the development and availability of new recirculation and atmospheric valves for BMW’s turbocharged 1.6-litre N13 four-cylinder petrol engine. This motor can be found in the second-generation BMW 1 Series hatchback produced from 2011 to 2016, and the sixth-generation BMW 3 Series saloon produced from 2012 to 2015.
The valves are designed for 114i, 116i and 120i models produced under the F20 (five-door) and F21 (three-door) chassis codes, plus 316i and 320i EfficientDynamics models produced under the F30 (saloon) chassis code.
Forge engineers particularly recommend the fitment of either device if turbo boost pressure has been increased through an ECU software upgrade. It is also recommended as an effective way to avoid boost pressure being lost through a rupture in the original rubber diaphragm. This is a common problem in vehicles operating in hot climates and is not always signalled by an engine check light.
The new Forge Motorsport recirculation or atmospheric valve conversion for BMW’s turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder N13 petrol engine has been developed as a direct replacement for the original, electronically controlled bypass valve. Each new valve therefore retains its easy-to-reach position on the compressor side of the turbo. As a result, Forge has given its installation a difficulty rating of just two out of ten – perfect for enthusiasts with no particular mechanical or engineering experience.
Behind the discreet, anodised black exterior of these valves lie top quality internals chosen for their consistent and responsive behaviour. An aluminium piston, sealed against the bore with heat-stabilised Viton O-rings, replaces the vulnerable, original diaphragm, while the actuating spring can be switched for a stronger version (supplied in kit) if you are generating higher than standard boost pressure. It is important to note that valve actuation remains under the control of the original engine management system, so its operation will not trigger any fault codes.
The only decision owners need to make is whether to choose the recirculating valve for ultimate OE-style discretion, or the atmospheric version, which will produce the distinctive turbo flutter sound of forced induction pressure being released. Either valve guarantees the same reliable and super-responsive control of intake pressure that owners expect of such a Forge Motorsport product.
