British Speedway champion Charles Wright – who is sponsored by ignition specialist NGK – has a new team and new goals for 2020.

The 31-year-old will ride for his local team Belle Vue Aces, having moved from Premiership League rival Peterborough, and aims to retain his British title and be picked to represent Britain this season in the Speedway of Nations final with both meetings being held at his new home track in Manchester.

Stockport-born Wright follows in the footsteps of his grandfather Jim Yacoby in racing for Belle Vue.

He said: “It’s fantastic to be joining my local team which my grandad rode for and which is just down the road from where I live. Belle Vue is a very professional set-up and is a very good track which everyone likes riding on.

“We’ve got a really good group of riders this season who are all triers so I’m hopeful that we can be on form when the play-offs come around at the end of the season.”

Wright is looking to retain the British title which he won in 2019 in what was a very successful season for him which saw him compete in the British Speedway Grand Prix in Cardiff.

He said: “It was fantastic to win the British championship and also to race at Cardiff in front of 45,000 fans against the top 16 riders in the World.”

Wright, who will also continue to ride for the Redcar Bears in the British Championship in 2020, is proud to be sponsored by NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, which is a long-time supporter of Speedway.

He said: “I’ve always used NGK spark plugs as they are a fantastic product and it is brilliant to have the support of such a well-known brand. They’re number one.”

NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd Marketing Manager Mark Hallam said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring Charles for the 2020 season. He had a fantastic season last year and with our support will hopefully have an even better one in 2020.”
